Building a home in Spain from abroad
Managing your project without living in Spain
More and more people are choosing to build their home in Spain while living outside the country, whether as a future residence, a second home or an investment. Distance raises a fair question: how do you keep control of a project this size without being able to visit the site every week? At Blues Simon Group, we’ve spent years working with international clients on the Costa Blanca, and the answer lies in how the project is organised from day one, not in the distance itself.
One point of contact, not a set of separate relationships
One of the main reasons people hesitate to build remotely is not knowing who to ask when a question comes up. That’s why every project has a single point of contact who centralises decisions, progress and communication, rather than leaving the owner to coordinate separately with an architect, a builder and an interior designer.
That person coordinates the search for the plot, the architectural design, permitting and regulatory approval, the choice of materials and finishes, and the full execution of the build. How involved the owner wants to be in each decision is adjusted to their preference, some want to sign off on every finish, others prefer to delegate fully and only be updated on the major milestones.
Real visibility, not just a promise of transparency
Living abroad shouldn’t mean finding out about progress on site weeks after it happens. Follow-up includes regular reports with photos, video and technical notes on the real state of the build, video calls whenever the client needs one, and permanent digital access to the project’s legal and technical documentation.
For procedures that require a legal presence, such as signing certain documents, a power of attorney is the usual tool that allows someone to represent the owner in Spain without them having to travel for every formality. It doesn’t replace advice from a notary or lawyer, which is still needed to set up this kind of representation, but it’s what makes building in Spain compatible with living somewhere else.
Coordinating every trade, without the client having to do it
A luxury home project means coordinating architects, engineers, interior designers, landscapers and specialist technical teams. When the owner lives abroad, that coordination can’t depend on frequent in-person meetings, so it falls to centralised project management: making sure design, timelines and agreed quality levels are met, and resolving on-site issues without the client needing to step in on every operational detail.
Handover, even from a distance
Once construction is complete, handover is arranged around the owner’s availability, in person if they can travel to Spain at that point, or virtually if not, with a full video walkthrough before final handover. The home is delivered inspected, clean, with every system checked, and support doesn’t end there. Through our 360 support service, we remain available afterwards, which matters in particular for someone who doesn’t live in the home full time and needs someone reliable to turn to if anything comes up.
Building in Spain from abroad shouldn’t stand in the way of the home you have in mind. With the right team and the right communication, distance stops being an obstacle and becomes just another detail of the project.
