Before the first meeting with an architecture team, there’s a handful of questions worth having thought through, not resolved in detail, but with a clear direction. The more defined these answers are going in, the faster and more purposefully the project moves afterwards. These are the five decisions that shape everything that follows.

1. How you want to move through your own home

Before talking square metres, it’s worth thinking about flow: an open concept, or clearly defined zones by function? Where should private rooms sit in relation to shared ones? How should the interior connect with the garden or pool? You don’t need to arrive with the layout worked out, but you should have a sense of how you want to live in the space day to day. 2. What role natural light plays in your routine

A home’s orientation isn’t only a technical decision, it’s also a decision about how you want to experience light: bright mornings in the bedroom, long evenings in the living room, a kitchen that catches midday sun. Having this clear from the start helps shape massing and the position of each room, rather than discovering afterwards that the light doesn’t fall where it was needed.

3. What materials you want to age alongside you

You don’t need to arrive with a catalogue of finishes, but it helps to have a sense of what kind of materials feel like you: natural stone, wood, exposed concrete, warmer or more mineral finishes. This decision also shapes how the house feels and sounds, not just how it looks.

4. What architectural style should speak for you

Mediterranean minimalism, warm contemporary, a more traditional language reinterpreted, style needs to respond to both how you live and the setting and regulations of where you’re building. It’s not a decision about trends, it’s a decision about long term identity.

5. How much weight the outdoors should carry

In the Mediterranean, the relationship between indoors and out is usually one of the decisions with the biggest impact on the final result: porches, pergolas, large glazed openings, visual continuity with the garden. Thinking this through from the start avoids having to force it later onto an already finished design.

Arriving with the right questions, not all the answers
